Yeah, I’m “selling out”. This is my first post in english and I’m doing it just to reach a larger audience. But shit, is it really selling out? I’m not going to be making any money so… No. Fuck no. This is not selling out. It’s expanding, is what it is.
Anyway, a while ago there was talk about two masters of cinema: Lars von Trier and Martin Scorsese, possibly teaming up for a film project. The word was that they would remake Taxi Driver. Weird, but still exciting news. Having seen The Five Obstructions, I was wondering if it would be a similar thing to the whole “working on revisions on an earlier work from the other director” business. The other director being Jørgen Leth on The Five Obstructions, and then possibly Scorsese on something new.
Turns out that Scorsese and von Trier are in fact working together. They are talking about doing a sequel to the awesome documentary The Five Obstructions and will be doing it sometime next year. Being a huge fan of Martin Scorsese, and especially of Lars von Trier, I’m really excited for it. We might see Scorsese working with one of the films he made in the 60s or 70s or maybe even later… but if von Trier has the same motives as on the previous doc, he will be exploring much more than Scorsese’s film making skills. The Five Obstructions was about taking Jørgen Leth into filmmaking territories he had yet not entered. Lars von Trier mixed Leth’s personal fears and morality issues and made him confront them by doing one of his old short films over and over, with different rules and in settings Leth would have problems with.
Being somewhat of a twisted genius, von Trier will probably be analyzing Scorsese as a director and person in sorta the same way. And I think he’ll be enjoying every minute of it. Taking all the information in like pieces of a delicious cake.
